Countless studies have found that moving home is among life's most stressful events. Quite simply, it's a hassle!
Of course, lists and apps can help you stay organized and on top of the various moving tasks ahead of the big day. One thing it's crucial to place at the top of those to-do's is updating your address.
Your address is part of your identity, so it's essential to let all the relevant parties know when you change your residence. That includes your bank, employer, doctor, veterinarian's office, insurance provider, vehicle registration, and Uncle Sam, who needs to know your current address as part of your voter registration information.
However, even with that exhaustive list, some places might not occur to you when considering an address change, such as your phone or browser's autofill and your favorite online shopping sites.
But don't fret. Thanks to technology, you can easily update much of your information, even from the comfort of home.
Watch this video for different ways and places to update your address online if you're moving.
USPS change of address
The United States Postal Service's (USPS) website has a form on which you can update your address wherever you are.
It includes mail forwarding to ensure you don't miss anything during the transition period. This can be established up to 3 months before your moving date or, in case you forgot to do it, 30 days afterward.
The post office forwards mail for a year, but you can pay to extend it for an additional 6, 12 or 18 months.
USPS's mover's guide also lets you update your voter registration simultaneously - just make sure you tick the box at the top of the page.
Autofill
Autofill is a feature smartphones, browsers, computers, and more have built in that can automatically fill in information like your name, number, and address. So, you'll want to update your address here, too.
To update autofill in a Chrome browser:
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner.
- Click Passwords and Autofill.
- Click addresses and More.
- Add or edit to include your new address.
This also updates your address on Android devices.
For Apple users, updating your address in your contact card will change it across connected devices, including Safari browsers.
To update your contact card:
- Open the Contacts app on your device.
- Click on your entry. This is usually the first entry.
- Tap Edit.
- Change the address entry.
- Click Done.
Billing Address
Don't forget to update your address anywhere your credit card is saved.
This would include places like:
- On your phone or browsers.
- Streaming services.
- Online shopping sites.
- Paid apps.
- Anywhere you have automatic bill pay using a credit card.
